our rooms

All of the rooms in The Lodge are named for notable and diverse explorers and pioneers of ranching in the area. Each of these individuals made a significant contribution to our local cowboy, Western, and outdoor culture.

  • This is our largest room with windows facing east and north overlooking the horse paddock and pasture.
  • Beds can be configured as 1 King Bed or 2 Twin Beds (please specify when you book)

John Palliser (1817-1887) is most well known for instigating and leading the Palliser Expedition (1857-1860) which explored and documented the vast and rugged wilderness of Western Canada. His surveys were instrumental in opening a new era of settlement and development in this area. He was an advocate of Aboriginal independence and believed the native populations should self-govern rather than be colonized.

  • This east facing room overlooks the horse paddock and adjacent pasture.
  • Beds can be configured as 1 King Bed or 2 Twin Beds (please specify when you book).

According to legend, a native names “Kananaskis” (possibly Cree war chief Coumanaskis) was viscously attacked and left for dead during a raid, but rose and drove the attackers away. John Palliser bestowed the name Kananaski’s on several geological features in 1858. The Alberta Government designated Kananaskis Country in 1977 as a regulated land use area with emphasis on recreation.

  • This is a larger corner room with an east facing window.
  • Beds can be configured as 1 King Bed or 2 Twin Beds (please specify when you book).

James Sinclair (1811-1856) was a trader, explorer, and passionate advocate for Metis people. While working for the Hudson’s Bay company he was appointed to guide settler families (most of whom were Metis as well) from Red River (Manitoba) to Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River as part of the disputed Oregon territory.

  • This room has a south facing skylight window and a double bed.
  • Located closest to the washrooms

John Ware (c.1845-1905) was born into slavery and arrived in Canada in 1882. Well-respected as a horseman and rancher, he was instrumental in developing the foundations of the ranching industry in Alberta. Ware was recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance by the Government of Canada in 2002.

  • This cozy room with a south facing skylight window is equipped with a Queen Size Bed.

George Pocaterra (1882-1972) was a pioneering immigrant from Italy. He was known as a friend to white men and natives alike. Arriving in Canada in 1903, he founded one of the first dude ranches in the country.

The three large bedrooms (Palliser, Kananaskis, and Sinclair) can be fitted with either one king or two twin beds. There is room for one additional cot if need be.

“ It had always been my dream to ride western style on a ranch in Canada and that dream could not have been more perfectly realized during our stay at Moose Mountain. The horses were fit, safe and expert at the terrain, the lodge was beautiful”

Naemoor,

“Our guide Kristen was very knowledgeable and personable. The owners Neil and Undina are tremendous hosts. The horses and tack first rate. We stayed at the lodge and did day trips in the foothills with stunning scenery.”
